4 Questions You'll Have For Your New Internet Service Provider

Are you switching to a new Internet service provider, but have a few questions about the service you'll be receiving? It is normal to have the following questions before you sign up for any new Internet service and have it installed.

Is It Required To Rent The Modem?

Your new ISP will likely try to have you rent a modem directly from them, or allow you to bring your own equipment. However, the need for mandatory equipment rental will depend on what kind of service you are getting. If you are also bundling voice or security services with your new ISP, you may be required to get the modem directly from them. This is because it has the technology to connect everything together, so you can make phone calls and so that your security system can call for help. If you are not bundling those services, chances are that you can bring your own equipment.

Are There Data Caps?

You will want to ask about any data caps that the new ISP has. Data caps are not something that all ISPs have, but those that do will be quite clear about how much data you are allowed to use in a single month before you are charged overages. Thankfully, most people do not even come close to reaching those data caps unless they are constantly downloading and uploading very large files. You may be surprised at how much data needs to be downloaded to reach 1TB of data use.

Will Upload Speeds Be Limited?

If you are subscribing to another Internet service provider that provides service over a coaxial cable, chances are that they will have the same unload and download limitations when it comes to speeds. That is because coaxial-based Internet uses bonded channels to combine multiple lines together to create that big pipe that you use for data transfers. Since downloads are much more common than uploads, more channels are bonded together to create the path for downloading than for uploading. A fiber Internet provider is going to be able to provide faster upload speeds if that is something that interests you.

Will Your Old Service Be Completely Disconnected?

The installer can either use the old lines to run the Internet to your home or install brand new lines for your Internet connection. If you're keeping services from your previous Internet provider, such as television service, let your installer know so that they don't use those old lines for your new service.
